One in four people worldwide (over a billion people) are using social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, to create, share, and discuss content. Social media users aren't just telling the world about what celebrities they saw and what they ate for breakfast, they're also publicly telling the world about their health and medically-related activities, including their plans and intentions for health behavior change, mental health-related moods, and health outcomes. Researchers, public health professionals, and companies are beginning to use social media as a source of information to monitor people's health behaviors and health outcomes. In this talk, Dr. Sean Young, a UCLA medical school professor, the Executive Director of the University of California Institute for Prediction Technology, and author of the #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller, Stick with It, will talk about cutting edge research on how social media can be used to monitor and predict health behaviors and outcomes and how social media communities can be used to prevent the spread of disease.
