Metal Additive Manufacturing for Aerospace Applications

Melanie Lang (Managing Director, Formalloy)

Location: 208B

Date: Tuesday, February 5

Time: 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Track: 3D Printing Innovation Summit

Vault Recording: TBD

Laser metal deposition (LMD)/directed energy deposition (DED) is revolutionizing how the aerospace industry designs and builds high-value components across the manufacturing spectrum from prototyping to production. Today's components are often fabricated using traditional manufacturing methods, such as forgings with significant post processing. Laser-based additive manufacturing is an alternative, single-step method for producing complex, multi-material, dense or porous, near net-shape parts that can outperform their traditionally manufactured equivalents with enhanced properties. This session will cover:

  • Laser-based additive manufacturing as an alternative method for producing metal parts
  • The Laser Metal Deposition process and key components
  • Display parts made from Laser Metal Deposition, such as sample rocket nozzle components
