A new 3D printer technology is reshaping the way silicone rubber medical devices are designed. Using heat-curable liquid silicone rubber (LSR) through a Liquid Additive Manufacturing (LAM) process, functional prototypes can be made in just a couple of days. The technology offers a world of possibilities and applications in the manufacturing of anatomically customized devices.
• LAM 3D printing technology uses heat-cured LSR so parts are analogous to injection molded LSR parts used every day.
• The potential applications are many and useful to both the Design Engineer and those in need of custom fitted type devices such as prosthetic, infant care, or biomechanical manipulation.
• Adaptability of the LAM technology to medical device applications is vast with little intellectual property restrictions so far.
